All three shows were presented by the 2010 Eurovision Song Contest winner, Lena Meyer-Landrut.

On April 24th 2020, the host broadcaster ARD and YEBU announced that Düsseldorf will host the pilot edition, with Merkur Spiel-Arenabeing the venue. The arena holds up to 66,500 people, a number that will be reduced to 20,000 people for the semi-finals, due to the smaller number of countries that compete in the first two shows. The arena demanded the construction of a roof, something that is into the proposed cost of the host broadcaster. Berlin and Cologne withdrew on April 23rd, due to the unavailability of the venues to host the rehearsals, that are arranged to take part at the end of June.

Visual Design

This edition's slogan, "HEAL", together with the official logo, were revealed on April 15th. Designed by Nicholas and James Jones-Walterson, “HEAL is referred to the critical condition the world is in, because of the COVID-19 outbreak. This contest will be an escape from all the sadness we are all experiencing. The two hands that are almost touching inside the circle symbolize the reconnection after this nightmare ends".

Semi-Final Allocation Draw

The draw to determine the participating countries' semi-finals took place on May 31 2020, at Düsseldorf's City Hall. The semi-finalists were divided over five pots, based on alphabetical order for the pilot edition. Drawing from different pots helped to maintain the inviolable and fair spirit of the contest. The draw also determined which five countries (each from one pot) joined the host country, Germany, and in which semi-final each of the six automatic qualifiers voted in. The ceremony was hosted by 2011 Eurovision Song Contest presenter, Anke Engelke, and included the start of the host city insignias to Thomas Geisel, Mayor of Düsseldorf.

 US Virgin Islands entrant

On Sunday May 3rd 2020, the US Virgin Islands' broadcaster, "YE.VI", announced that the territory would be represented by Imagine Dragons and their song "Bad Liar", who had won their national final. The song was at first evaluated and approved by the YEBU. On May 5th, the Greek HoD informed the Executive Supervisor, Nicholas Jones-Walterson, that the song was released in 2018. Therefore the HoD of the US Virgin Islands was informed that the entry had to be disqualified. On Saturday May 9th 2020, the broadcaster announced that the winner withdrew from the contest, and the runner-up, The Score with the song "In My Bones", would represent the micronation in Düsseldorf.
